ISUZU WORLDWIDE
- The name "ISUZU" was taken from the Isuzu Gawa, or Isuzu River in Ise, Southern Mie Prefecture in Japan.
- "ISUZU" literally means 50 Bells, based on the Chinese characters. The real meaning in Japanese, however, is 50 waves.
- Although Isuzu traces its origins as far back as 1916, it was only 1934 that the name Isuzu appeared, as standard model car launched by Japan's Ministry of Trade and Industry.
- And finally, in 1949, the company officially adopted the name ISUZU MOTORS LTD.
-Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., and Tokyo Gas Electric and Industrial Co. initiated plans to produce automobiles in 1916.
- A technical cooperation with Wosley Motor Company was established in 1918.
- In 1922, the Wosley model A-9 was completed, and became the first domestically produced truck in Japan.
- In 1933, Ishikawajima Automotive Works merged with Dot Automobile Industries and changed its name to Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. In 1933
- In 1934, a Diesel Research Committee was organized by the company president, Tomonosuke Kono and produced the first air-cooled diesel engine -
- This engine soon surpassed those produced by other competing companies when it was fitted into vehicles for both civilian and military use
- In 1936, a Diesel Research Committee organized by Tomosuke Kono, successfully developed two air-cooled diesel engine models, the DA4 and the DA6
- These early diesel engine designs were to serve as the foundation of all later generations of Isuzu Diesel Engines
- In 1937, Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. merged with two other companies and became Tokyo Automobile Industries
- In 1941 the company was designated by the Japanese government as the only company permitted to manufacture diesel-powered automobiles.
- Having gained foothold in the industry in 1941, Isuzu played a key role in the postwar reconstruction efforts.
- Isuzu made BX91 buses and TX90 trucks, were extensively used as the country was rebuilt. As a result, Isuzu became solidified in the public mind as a top diesel engine manufacturer.
- Domestic demand for commercial vehicles grew rapidly due to the Korean war. Isuzu took advantage, as a result, sales shot up which gave the company more elbow room to develop better products
- Isuzu launched the Elf (N-Series) in 1959
- The Elf immediately became Japan's best-selling light-duty truck because of an original and easy to use cab-over-engine style
